Aerodynamics of the Crew Return Vehicle and the Parafoil at Different Opening Stages
Lea Haubelt, T*AFSM
This project is part of a research effort by the T*AFSM in
collaboration with NASA Johnson Space Center. The goal in
this project is to simulate the aerodynamics of both the Crew
Return Vehicle of the International Space Station and the
ram-air parachute to be used for the gliding and soft landing
of the CRV.
Figure 1: The CRV and parachute during a flight test.
Figure 2: The computed air pressure distribution on the surface of the CRV and the parachute, for the final stage of the parachute opening sequence.
